Just nipped over to the Bloc Party site to check the new single out. After previous single Flux they could have gone two ways and it looks like the electronics have won out. It seems strange to completely abandon the Gang Of Four punkiness that made them so popular in the first place. Maybe they’ve all got ADD? Maybe Kele got a sampler for his birthday?
I like it though. I enjoyed their first album but I never got round to getting the 2nd album because what I heard of it sounded like more of the same. After this I’m interested to see what they end up doing.
Personally I’m all for bands throwing a curveball and doing what the hell they want. It’ll make fans, lose fans, create reactions of “meh” but you can’t fault a band for trying something new.
Remi Gaillard (what do you mean you’ve never heard of him? Me neither….) is according to Wikipedia, a French Prankster. At first I thought that that was a contender for oxymoron of the year. However, after watching this video it seems that Remi can prove us wrong after all. This following video of his football skills is great. I showed it to my mate Paul who said “he goes through some balls”. Yes he does but he also has balls of steel. Check it….
Due the new arrival of wee man grub Joshua in to the household life has been a sick fueled, dirty nappy, hectic/stressful/tying/tiring/emotional/rewarding (delete as applicable) life-changing experience to say the least. After 5 weeks old, no matter what anyone tries to tell you beforehand, it is apparent that when hurricane baby hits your household there is no preparing for it. I’ve lost count of the times Joshua has managed to piss and puke on me. I thought I’d seen it all until I’d seen my newborn son fire fresh feaces across his changing mat and into the smallest of gaps on his changing table so that despite gallons of Dettol it’s sure to lodged in the woodgrain forever. I only have a vague recollection of this occurrence (and that’s enough to be honest) as it happened at such a speed I doubt that the world’s fastest camera would have been able to capture it.
Between feeds, nappy changes, making bottles up and going to the day job I occasionally find time for myself. Occasionally…. This at least goes someway to explaining why the updates have been so sparse though. It was one of these moments to myself that I settled down to watch UNKLE live via ChannelBee.com last night. ChannelBee.com is Tim Lovejoy’s new online venture and it’s not half bad actually. Only in it’s second week or so, it’s Tim and the old Soccer AM team, Fenners, Sheephead, Neil the Square, Tramp, etc doing what they do best. There are the usual sketches, shit jokes somehow made good, music features, football discussions, celeb interviews all online with no buffering (provided you install the Move Media Player the site uses). So far so good for most of the content but most impressive so far are the series of live gigs they’ve broadcasted. Aside from the aforementioned UNKLE gig last night which was superb, they the have the following coming up over the next week;
Lupe Fiasco – 14/07/2008
We Are Scientists – 15/07/2008
The Feeling – 17/07/2008
Duffy – 18/07/2008
Personally, The Feeling can fuck off as they are nothing more than Cliff Richard in band form but the others are certainly worth tuning in for (if you can call it tuning-in when it’s via the web….). Don’t worry if you’ve missed out on the previous gigs by the likes of The Fratellis, Late Of The Pier, Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, Pigeon Detectives and Kebab Shop Man (who is ace btw). Have a gander. It’s worth it.
Kevin Smith has released a smirk inducing teaser for his new film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Doesn’t really give much away in terms of film content but the Kevin Smith trademark potty mouth dialogue-heavy style is still evident. Which is always a good thing. : )
Yeah well. I’ve been a busy lad going out and doing fun things such as drinking beer, watching Queens of the Stone Age live at Leeds Uni, watching United win a lot. I’ve also been doing things which aren’t so much fun such as visiting hospitals, working and sleeping but they’re necessary evils and there is sod all I can do about them.
In other news, musically this year is shaping up just fine. There are a few new releases over the next couple of months, which if you don’t check out, you’re missing out.
Out this week is the long awaited Saturnalia album from The Gutter Twins.
A dark, brooding, swirling mass of gothic guitar, collaboration between The Afghan Whigs Greg Dulli and everyone’s favourite whiskey drenched Leonard Cohen alike hired gun Mark Lanagen.
You can hear the brilliance in it’s entirity onine but not sure for how long though.
Next week, 10/03/08, sees the UK release of MGMT’s debut, Oracular Spectacular;
Can the album meet the expectations set out by the “Flaming Lips-on-acid” single Time to Pretend though?
New York based DJ Andy Butler pulls in Anthony (and the JOhnsons) Hegarty and Tim Goldsworty (of DFA and LCD Soundsystem) to create a sound with more than a nod to 70s Disco. Lead single Blind gives you a taster of what to expect…
The 24th of March ushers in a couple of noteworthy releases. Firstly, oddly monikerd young noisy electro upstarts Does It Offend You, Yeah? release their debut album, You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into.
Expect more noise in the same vein as We Are Rockstars.
I’ll be going to see them at Leeds Cockpit on the 28th so expect some photos and shit. See you there?
Second release, is new album Diamond Hoo Ha from old hands Supergrass.
A return to the upbeat old Supergrass following 2006 expectedly low-key underated Road to Rouen. New track Bad Blood would suggest that’s the battle plan;
Also, props must go to United in seeing off Lyon to progress through to the next stage of the Champions League. Is this year a repeat of 99? Heres hoping….
After close to 30 years of home consoles and computers, the modern media has always struggled to bring to televison a show which covers gaming and isn’t plain shit. From being a young lad in the 80s watching spotty gimps play Paperboy and Hyper Sports on First Class, Gamesmaster and Bad Infuence in the early 90s, the absolute bag of shit which was Games-World (only good for featuring a leather clad Jet from Gladiators), through to Bits, Thumb Bandits, Bravo’s Gamer TV there has always been something missing for the people who a) aren’t kids, b) have some intelligence, c) manage to fit in gaming around a social life and beer. Even in this day and age of a thousand channels transmitted directly into the idiot box in the corner of your room, the only “dedicated” channel is Xleague.tv, which is another graduate from the Why Don’t You school of TV.
So this brings me to Attempt #5631 by UK broadcasters to try and create a half decent adult based gaming show which doesn’t make you want to claw your eyes out and stick the squashed up remains into your ears. The BBC, specifically BBC Scotland, have managed to make it to series 3 of VideoGaiden, which is actually half decent, and you don’t even have to be in Scotland to watch it. You can watch Episode One below but you can watch the entire third series at the show’s website. Be aware that it features some potty mouthed languague. Of course that’s only a good thing but try not to have it on if the in-laws are round for tea though…
