They Call It Acid
“The Hippies had ‘Woodstock’, the Mods ‘Quadrophenia’ and the Punks ‘The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle – ‘THEY CALL IT ACID‘ is the story of Acid House, the birth of Rave, the culture the Government failed to crush! “
Gordon Mason’s new film all about rave captures the essence of the acid explosion. Check out the trailer;
Not sure about a release date or where to see it but I expect they’ll update the official YouTube channel as and when.

Memories and MAME World Records
I’ve been a gamer pretty much as long as I can remember right from the Atari 2600, right through to your present day where Xbox 360s and PS3s hold pride of place in almost every house. (Even the Redknapps play them…) Most of those systems of the past 30 years take up the entire space under the spare bed and most of the loft space too much to the annoyance of the other half. However, as a child and teenager nothing in the home could come close to the experience of throwing countless 10 pences down the neck of an arcade machine. Whether it was tapping your finger ends to bloody stumps playing Hyper Sports (I was always shit at weight lifting), getting motion sickness on the hydraulic Power Drift, crying at just how hard Ghosts and Goblins was or dislocating your wrist trying to pull off Zangief’s Spinning Piledriver in Street Fighter II, the Arcades were the absolute mecca. Gilles Peterson / DJ Hell
Whilst I’m a regular listener to Gilles Peterson’s podcast, it’s been quite a while since I’ve listened to his Radio 1 show. No particular reason other procrastination really. He must have known I was listening this week as he opened with the Angst by DJ Hell. Much has been made of it’s gothic and balearic nods whilst others have likened it to Can and Neu of which I’m not so sure. There is more than an hint of Dj Shadow in there in my opinion paticularly pt1. References and influences aside its a wonderful track. You can listen to all 13 minutes and 56 seconds of Part 1 and 2 here. (Lanches in seperate player)
Oh and Gilles’ show wasn’t half bad either!

The Return of SMD
It’s looking like a new Simian Mobile Disco album is on the horizon. In case you didn’t know, this is a very very good thing. Pete Tong played a new track entitled 10,000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong which you can check out at The Hype Machine. Also, popped up on Youtube, is the video for new single Synthesise.
Twitchy bleeping business as usual from the SMD boys which, as I’ve already said, is a very very good thing. If these guys are new to you and you’ve like what you’ve heard then pick up their last album Attack Sustain Delay Release. You won’t be sorry for long…

Malcolm Mclaren – Buffalo Gals – 1982
Hey up Jude
We all know The Temptations. We all know their hits too. My Girl, Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone, Ball of Confusion, Cloud Nine and Just my imagination to name a few. Dig a little deeper though and snuck away on their 1969 album is a frankly spanking cover of The Beatles’ Hey Jude. Have a listen. If you don’t like it then fair enough. You can’t please all the people all of the time.
Also on the album is the politically minded Message From A Black Man which RZA sampled for his recent You Can’t Stop Me Now. That’s right fact fans.
